Central banks to impact markets today
The European Central Bank will be announcing its rate decision today at 11:45 GMT, followed by a press conference with ECB President Mario Draghi at 12:30 GMT, potentially generating volatility for European financial instruments. Later, at 18:00 GMT, minutes from the latest Federal Open Market Committee meeting will be released, impacting the USD and other major instruments in the US.
Today’s highlights: EU to decide on Brexit deadline today
- EU to hold emergency Brexit summit: Representative from the 27 members of the European union will meet in Brussels today to discuss the extension of the deadline for the UK’s divorce from the Union. Yesterday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May met with her German and French counterparts, trying to secure support for the delay.
- Wall Street closes lower: The DJ30 posted its second negative close in a row, joined by the SPX500 and NSDQ100. The recent losses are attributed to the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming earnings season. Despite Facebook climbing more than 1.5%, other major tech stocks, such as Apple and Amazon registered losses, dragging the sector down.
- Cryptos remain in the green: After starting the week with noticeable price swings, the cryptocurrency market was positive overall over the past 24 hours, as 8 of the top 10 cryptos were in the green at the time of writing. Bitcoin showed small gains, holding above the $5,200 mark, while EOS led the top 10, climbing more than 6%.
- Asian markets mostly lower: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday slashed its global economic growth forecast, impacting global markets. This morning, markets in the East were seen lower, as both the JPN225 and HKG50 indices registered losses, while the China50 index was nearly flat at the time of writing.
